With four wineries boasting more than 1,000 national and international awards, it’s no wonder Bullitt County is known as the Wine Capital of Kentucky. Take time to enjoy the unique experience of wine making in our county, where you can truly taste the dedication and passion our wine makers have for their craft.
Bullitt County is also home to the Jim Beam American Outpost at James B. Beam Distilling Co. and Four Roses Bourbon Experience. Come see how corn, rye, and barley, combined with our area’s natural limestone-filtered water, come together to create some of the best whiskey in the world.
Gallant Fox Mt Washington is the first brewery in Bullitt County and is named in honor of the American Thoroughbred racehorse, Gallant Fox, who was the second winner of the American Triple Crown. The brewery offers a delicious pub grub menu, a large bourbon bar, and of course, their own craft beer selections. Be sure to try The Golden Bullitt, named after the county in which it resides.

Mike's initial love of the land and farming developed in his youth when he would spend summers with his aunt and uncle, Barbara and Lewis Bandy, on their farm in Irvington, Kentucky. This love has stayed with him throughout his life's journey. While stationed in France during his army enlistment, Mike developed a taste for wine and a deep interest in the wine making process.
When Mike and Karen married in 1996, he expressed to her his dream to someday own and operate a vineyard and winery. Over the years Mike has casually looked for the right property. He was drawn to Brooks Hill where the Hatzell family roots run deep. After one look at the property, Mike could envision the vineyard and winery, it took Karen quite a bit longer to see it! In August 2006, Mike and Karen purchased the property where Brooks Hill Winery sits.
It is their hope that you will come and visit them at Brooks Hill Winery, the little winery up the hill, meet their beautiful labradoodle, Lili, enjoy some Brooks Hill wine, walk in the woods, sit on the patio, under the pavilion or in front of the fireplace and just uncork and unwine!
Many unique wines are created at Forest Edge Winery. Be sure to add these to your tasting choices: Chocca-Con, Ridge Runner Red (aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels), Summer Daze, and a local favorite, Bluegrass Blend. They also boast a couple of unique products such as Wine-O-Rita and Wine-O-Colada both packaged in cans instead of bottles. Forest Edge Winery also offers prepackaged snacks like crackers, cheese, and trail mix to enjoy with your wine.
It began when Paul Jones, Jr., the founder of Four Roses Bourbon, became smitten by the beauty of a Southern belle. It is said that he sent a proposal to her, and she replied that if her answer were “Yes,” she would wear a corsage of roses on her gown to the upcoming grand ball. Paul Jones waited for her answer excitedly on that night of the grand ball…when she arrived in her beautiful gown, she wore a corsage of four red roses. He later named his Bourbon “Four Roses” as a symbol of his devout passion for the lovely belle, a passion he thereafter transferred to making his beloved Four Roses Bourbon.
We’ve been making bourbon for more than two hundred years. We’ve met a lot of people along the way. And there’s always room for one more.
